A food label is the silent conversation between your business and the customer. Before they taste the food, before they even open the package, the label tells them what they are about to eat, who made it, whether it is safe, and -- in the best cases -- why they should come back for more. For packaged food businesses in India, from mithai shops and bakeries to cloud kitchens and tiffin services, labels and stickers are not optional decorations. They are regulatory requirements, branding tools, and operational aids all in one.
India's food labelling landscape has become significantly more regulated in recent years. FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) has tightened requirements for what must appear on food labels, and enforcement is becoming more consistent. Whether you are a small home baker or a large-scale food manufacturer, understanding food labelling requirements is no longer something you can afford to ignore.
Why Food Labels and Stickers Matter
Regulatory Compliance
FSSAI mandates that all packaged food products sold in India must carry specific label information. This applies to:
- Pre-packaged food products sold through retail or online channels
- Food served through delivery and takeaway with brand packaging
- Catering food served to institutional clients
- Home-based food businesses registered under FSSAI
Non-compliance can result in fines (Rs 2-5 lakh), product recalls, and even cancellation of your FSSAI license. Read more about regulations in our FSSAI packaging guide.
Customer Trust and Information
Modern consumers want to know what they are eating. Allergen information, ingredient lists, and nutritional data are no longer demands exclusive to premium markets -- they are mainstream expectations. A clear, honest label builds trust. A missing or vague label creates suspicion.
Brand Identity
For small and medium food businesses, a well-designed label is often the most impactful branding investment. It transforms a generic container into your branded product. Customers remember the label that catches their eye -- and they use it to find your product again.
What FSSAI Requires on Food Labels
Under the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020, the following information is mandatory on pre-packaged food labels:
- Product name: The common or usual name of the food item
- Ingredient list: All ingredients listed in descending order of their composition by weight
- Nutritional information: Energy (kcal), protein, carbohydrates, total sugars, added sugars, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium per 100g/100ml and per serve
- Allergen declaration: Must declare if the product contains cereals with gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, tree nuts, or sulphite
- Veg/Non-Veg symbol: The green dot (vegetarian) or brown dot (non-vegetarian) symbol as per Indian regulations. This is unique to India and mandatory.
- Net quantity: Weight (g/kg) or volume (ml/L) of the product
- Date of manufacture and best before / use by date
- Name and address of manufacturer/packer/brand owner
- FSSAI license number with the FSSAI logo
- Lot/batch number for traceability
- Country of origin (for imported products)
The Veg/Non-Veg Symbol Rule
India is the only major market that mandates a visual vegetarian/non-vegetarian indicator on all food packages. The green circle in a green square means vegetarian; the brown triangle in a brown square means non-vegetarian. This symbol must be displayed prominently on the front of the package, with a minimum size of 3mm diameter for small packages and proportionally larger for bigger ones. Omitting this symbol is one of the most common FSSAI violations among small food businesses.
Types of Food Labels and Stickers
1. Pre-Printed Labels
Labels with all fixed information (brand name, logo, ingredient list, regulatory details) printed in bulk by a commercial printer. Variable information like manufacturing date and batch number is left blank to be filled in manually or with a date stamp.
Pros: Professional appearance. Consistent quality. Cost-effective at high volumes (Rs 0.50-3.00 per label at quantities of 5,000+).
Cons: Inflexible -- any information change requires a new print run. Minimum order quantities (typically 2,000-5,000 labels) mean wastage if information changes frequently.
Best for: Products with stable formulations and packaging -- packaged snacks, sweets, spice mixes, sauces, bakery items.
2. Thermal-Printed Labels
Labels printed on-demand using a thermal label printer. These are ideal for variable information -- date, batch number, weight, price -- and for businesses that need different labels for different products frequently.
Pros: Print on demand -- no minimum order. Easy to update information. Quick turnaround. Suitable for bar codes and QR codes.
Cons: Monochrome (typically black on white). Thermal prints can fade with heat exposure. Printer investment required (Rs 5,000-25,000).
Best for: Cloud kitchens, tiffin services, dairy shops, businesses with daily-changing menus or variable products.
3. Sticker Labels (Self-Adhesive)
The most versatile option. These are printed labels with adhesive backing that peel from a roll or sheet and stick directly onto containers, bags, or boxes. Available in every shape, size, and material.
Common materials:
- Paper stickers: Economical, good print quality, but not waterproof. Best for dry-environment packaging.
- Polypropylene (PP/BOPP) stickers: Water-resistant, durable, and available in glossy or matte finishes. Ideal for products exposed to moisture or refrigeration.
- Vinyl stickers: Most durable, waterproof, and resistant to oils and chemicals. Used for premium products or packages exposed to harsh conditions.
4. Tamper-Evident Labels
Labels that double as tamper-evident seals. These are placed across container lids or bag openings and show visible evidence (tearing, VOID residue) if removed. They combine regulatory labelling with security in one application.
5. Date and Price Labels
Small labels printed with just the manufacturing date, expiry date, and/or price. Applied using a handheld label gun (Rs 500-2,000). Essential for retail food products and bakeries.
Label Design Best Practices
Readability First
- Minimum font size for mandatory information should be 1.5 mm (FSSAI requirement for small packages) but aim for larger wherever space permits
- Use high-contrast colours -- dark text on light background. Avoid light text on light background or stylized fonts that sacrifice readability for aesthetics
- FSSAI information must be in English or Hindi. Many businesses add regional language text for local markets
Hierarchy of Information
- Product name and brand logo should be the most prominent elements
- Veg/Non-Veg symbol must be on the front and clearly visible
- Nutritional information can be on the back or side panel
- FSSAI license number and logo must be displayed but need not dominate the design
Practical Sizing
Your label must fit your packaging. Common label sizes for food packaging in India:
| Container Type | Typical Label Size | Label Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Small sauce cup / mithai box | 25 x 25 mm to 40 x 30 mm | Round or rectangle |
| Standard food container | 60 x 40 mm to 80 x 50 mm | Rectangle |
| Large container / tiffin box | 100 x 60 mm to 120 x 80 mm | Rectangle |
| Paper bag / carry bag | 80 x 80 mm to 120 x 60 mm | Round, square, or rectangle |
| Bottle / jar (wrap-around) | Full circumference x 50-80 mm | Rectangle (wrap) |
Stickers as Branding Tools
Beyond regulatory compliance, stickers and labels are powerful branding instruments for food businesses:
- Seal stickers: A branded sticker sealing the bag or box serves as both tamper evidence and a brand impression. Customers see your logo every time they open a package.
- Thank-you stickers: A small sticker with "Thank you for ordering" and your social media handles encourages repeat business and online engagement.
- Promotional stickers: Stickers advertising new items, combo offers, or loyalty programmes can be added to packaging at minimal cost.
- QR code stickers: Link to your online menu, Google review page, or WhatsApp ordering number. Learn more about QR codes in packaging in our smart packaging guide.

Practical Tips for Small Food Businesses
- Start with compliance. Before worrying about aesthetics, ensure your label contains all FSSAI-mandated information. A beautiful label that is missing required information is a regulatory liability.
- Use a standard template. Design one master label layout that accommodates all required information. For different products, only the product name, ingredients, and nutritional values change -- the layout, logo placement, and regulatory information stay the same.
- Invest in a thermal printer for variable data. A Rs 8,000-15,000 thermal printer pays for itself within weeks if you currently hand-write date and price labels. It also looks far more professional.
- Test adhesion before bulk ordering. Stickers that look perfect on the sample roll may not adhere well to your specific containers, especially if the container surface is textured, oily, or cold (from refrigeration). Always test on your actual packaging.
- Order labels from your packaging supplier. Many wholesale packaging suppliers, including Success Marketing, can source matching labels and stickers along with your containers and bags, simplifying procurement.
Food labels and stickers bridge the gap between regulatory compliance and brand building. When done right, a label does not just satisfy an inspector -- it sells your product, builds trust, and turns a first-time buyer into a repeat customer. Invest the time to get your labelling right, and treat every sticker as a brand ambassador for your food business.
